The organizations were in various stages of ACO development, with most being fully operational on a commercial level, yet they remain unsure or dubious about their participation in the federal MSSP ACO program. Half of the participants said they did not intend on applying for MSSP, 37.5 percent said they were unsure about applying and only 12.5 percent said they intended on applying.
Sixty percent of respondents indicated they would not apply to Pioneer ACO Program, while the other 40 percent said they either intended to or already had applied.
The primary reason respondents didn’t plan to apply to the MSSP or Pioneer ACO program was a concern over whether the program provided enough incentives for participation. Other factors affecting their decision include low Medicare patient populations, the lack of an opportunity to “digest the rule” and loopholes remaining within the final rule that may impede their success.
