NCQA Developing Specialty Practice Recognition Program

The National Committee for Quality Assurance has announced plans to implement a specialty practice recognition program, and will begin accepting public input on it next week.

Tentatively titled the NCQA Specialty Practice Recognition Program, it is designed in the same vein as NCQA’s patient-centered medical home recognition program, which recognizes primary care practices that coordinate care and meet other quality standards.

The forthcoming NCQA program for specialty practices would recognize practices that coordinate care, provide timely access to care, use information technology to reduce unnecessary tests, improve communication with patients and support continuous quality improvement.

The public comment period on NCQA’s specialty practice recognition plan begins on June 11 and is open through July 6. Those wishing to participate are asked to visit ncqa.org.

Specialty practices will be able to start applying for the new NCQA recognition program in early 2013.
