Steven Kalbfleisch, MD, associate professor of clinical medicine and medical director of cardiac electrophysiology at Wexner Medical Center, received the largest bonus at roughly $1.4 million. His total compensation in 2011 topped $2 million, which made Dr. Kalbfleisch the second-highest paid employee at the university. Thad Matta, Ohio State’s men’s basketball coach, was the highest-paid employee with compensation reaching $2.2 million.
OSU officials said the bonuses were justified because the medical school is self-funded and doesn’t take funds from taxes or tuition. “These five physicians [who top the list] were hired five years ago to build a nationally respected program in cardiac electrophysiology,” OSU spokesman Jim Lynch said in the report. “Today, that program is the largest in the state and treats patients from throughout a multistate region.”
