Students at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine in Nutley, N.J., will soon be able to train with virtual patients as part of a new educational platform.
Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health has received a $1 million gift from tech company Cotu to develop the platform, which will combine machine learning and mixed reality to simulate realistic clinical scenarios. The goal is to help students build skills in clinical decision-making, hands-on procedures and the ethical use of AI, according to a May 15 news release.
The platform will include a mixed-reality holographic module that allows students to interact with 3D anatomy and pathology for immersive surgical simulations.
The effort builds on the school’s existing health strategy elective course and is being led by the health system’s strategy and AI teams. Part of the $1 million funding will also support pilot testing to refine the platform before it is integrated into the curriculum.
