Researchers used a nested series of models across matching strata to determine the vaccine effectiveness for the high-dose vaccine in preventing flu-related hospital stays during the 2016-17 flu season in the Portland, Ore., metropolitan area.
Researchers studied 23,712 matched pairs of high-dose to standard-dose vaccinated seniors. They found the high-dose vaccine was 30.7 percent more effective at preventing flu-related hospitalizations than the standard-dose vaccines.
“For this study, the high-dose influenza vaccine provided superior protection for seniors against influenza hospitalization,” study authors concluded.
