Health officials investigate whooping cough outbreak in Baldwinsville (NY) School District

The Onondaga County (N.Y.) Health Department is currently investigating an outbreak of whooping cough affecting the Baldwinsville School District, according to a Syracuse.com report.

The health department reportedly sent a letter to school district parents instructing them to seek medical care and keep their kids out of school if they’re experiencing a persistent cough, according to the report. The department has not disclosed how many students have been sickened.

Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a bacterial illness transmitted via person-to-person contact. The illness causes uncontrollable, violent coughing, which can last for weeks or months.
