Between 2010 and 2018, the uninsured rate for this group dropped from 44 percent to 28 percent for those under 65.
However, in 2019, the demographic of nearly 5.7 million people was still the most uninsured group in the country. About 15 percent of all American Indians and Alaska Natives were uninsured.
The study noted social determinants of health such as poverty and unemployment tie into the demographic coverage gap. It also pointed to the American Rescue Plan and Medicaid expansion as key to driving down the demographic’s uninsured population.
