Family says girl died days after she was misdiagnosed with the flu

A California girl's mother said her daughter was misdiagnosed flu and died shortly after due to infection, according to The Washington Post.

Alyssa Alcaraz, 12, started experiencing flu-like symptoms Dec. 13. Her mother, Keila Lino, said she went with Alyssa to an urgent care center Dec. 14, and her daughter was diagnosed with the flu, according to the report. On Dec. 17, the day Alyssa died, she and her mother went back to the urgent care center after the 12-year-old reported breathing issues. They found out Alyssa had low oxygen levels, and the girl was immediately sent to Kaweah Delta Medical Center in Visalia, Calif., according to the report.

Ms. Lino told The Washington Post it was at the medical center that she and Alyssa's father were told their daughter had meningitis. They later learned the cause of death was a strep blood infection, the publication reported, citing a death certificate.

In light of her family's situation, Ms. Lino called on people diagnosed with the flu to ask physicians for further testing, according to the report.  She told The Washington Post the family has no current plans to take legal action against the urgent care center or the hospital.
