Georgia hospitals improve patient safety, prevent 20,000 incidents of harm

The Georgia Hospital Association's Hospital Engagement Network has made significant strides improving patient safety and care.

GHA's Hospital Engagement Network was recently recognized by CMS as being a participant in the national Partnership for Patients initiative to reduce healthcare-associated infections and hospital readmissions.

Together, the 111 hospitals in Georgia participating in the national initiative prevented 20,000 incidents of harm from 2012 through 2014, translating to an estimated savings of between $106 million and $136 million.

The hospitals also improved the following measures over the three-year period:

  • Readmissions (Medicare only) — decreased 12.3 percent
  • Early elective deliveries — reduced 97.5 percent
  • Surgery-site infections for hysterectomy patients — reduced 29.7 percent
  • Adverse drug events — decreased 61 percent (saving an estimated $39 million)
  • ICU central-line associated bloodstream infections — reduced 77.8 percent
  • Non-ICU CLABSIs — dropped 36.7 percent
