Georgia Hospital Association Patient Safety Saves $144M, Improves Quality

In its third year, data from the Marietta-based Georgia Hospital Association Hospital Engagement Network show the affiliation has improved patient safety and quality, saving $144 million in the process, according to a Coosa Valley News report.

GHA HEN was formed in January 2012 by GHA and 111 participating hospitals after being contracted by HHS to reduce adverse events and improve overall quality.

In the past two years, Georgia hospitals have seen 7.7 percent fewer Medicare beneficiary readmissions. Additionally, the overall mortality rate fell by 7.2 percent, there have been 4,000 fewer adverse drug events and 94 percent fewer patient falls resulting in injury.

Due to GHA HEN's success, HHS extended their contract as one of six HENs in the country to continue their work to reduce adverse events in additional patient care areas through the Leading Edge Advance Practice Topics program, a program focused on creating innovative practices to continue improve patient quality and safety, according to the report.
