Flu-related hospitalizations of the elderly are the highest they’ve been in nearly a decade, according to an Associated Press report.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 198 out of every 100,000 people age 65 and older — or roughly 86,000 people — have been hospitalized with a flu-related illness this season.

The CDC began tracking flu-related hospitalizations among the elderly during the 2005 to 2006 flu season. Previously, the record for most elderly flu-related hospitalizations was 183 hospitalizations per 100,000, set two years ago when the same H3N2 flu virus strain dominated.
