Flu cases fall by 27% in Arizona: 4 things to know

Arizona health officials reported 487 confirmed cases of influenza for the week ending March 3, marking a 27 percent decline in cases from the week prior, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services' most recent flu report.

Here are four things to know.

1. Arizona health officials recorded 27,444 laboratory confirmed cases of the flu between Oct. 1 and March 3, which is significantly more than the 5,534 flu cases confirmed in the state for the entire 2016-17 flu season.

2. Eighty-two percent of flu cases in Arizona have been attributable to influenza A. However, while rates of influenza A declined in recent weeks, reports of influenza B increased. This is in keeping with the national trend.

3. In its most recent report on national flu activity published March 2, the CDC said flu season had peaked, but warned flu transmission would likely continue for a few more weeks.

4. Arizona health officials have reported two pediatric flu deaths among residents so far this flu season. Nationally, the CDC has tallied 114 flu-related deaths among children.
