Flu activity continues downtrend, 10 pediatric flu deaths reported

As the 2016-2017 flu season comes to a close, influenza activity continued to decline for the week ending April 29, according the CDC's FluView update released Friday.

For the week of April 23, the percentage of laboratory specimens testing positive for influenza decreased, the proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness remained below the national baseline of 2.2 percent and the proportion of deaths attributable to pneumonia and influenza was less than the epidemic threshold set by the National Center for Health Statistics Mortality Surveillance System.

Officials received 10 reports of influenza-related pediatric deaths for the week. Three of the reported deaths occurred during the 2015-2016 flu season.

Thus far, 89 pediatric flu deaths have been reported during the 2016-2017 flu season.
