The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the first locally acquired case of chikungunya in the United States on July 17.
Chikungunya is transmitted through mosquito bites, and while more than 200 people in the United States have been previously diagnosed with the virus, these two are the first instances of the virus being acquired locally.
The CDC and state officials have urged Florida residents to be vigilant about eliminating mosquito breeding areas and preventing mosquito bites, according to the report.
