FDA Approves New Chair-Based Patient Sensor

EarlySense's Chair Sensor Solution, the first contact-free sensor for vital signs in a chair, has been granted marketing clearance by the Food and Drug Administration.

The sensor, which continuously monitors patients' heart rate, respiratory rate and movement, helps clinicians proactively respond to early signs of deterioration and prevent patient falls.

"Hospitals have shown us that they value smart beds, now for the first time they can get 'smart chairs,'" said Avner Halperin, CEO of EarlySense, in a news release.

The "smart chair" sensor was recently tested in Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga. "The biggest advantage of the chair sensor is that it monitors the patient when sitting on the chair and doesn't require any user contact," said SueLane Hughes, director of the medical/OPO unit at Coffee Regional, in the release. "The chair sensor is another tool to assist us in preventing patient falls by getting staff into patient's rooms before they have exited the chair."
