Eleven people have died from EEE this year, with four deaths reported in Michigan, three in Massachusetts, three in Connecticut and one in Rhode Island. Nationwide, health officials have reported about 30 cases of EEE in 2019, marking the highest number of human cases seen in the U.S. since 1964, when the CDC began tracking EEE cases.
EEE can cause a rare brain infection and has a 30 percent fatality rate, according to the CDC.
