Dr. Sacra was the third American with Ebola to be treated in the U.S. He received treatment at The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where he was airlifted in September 2014. He eventually beat the deadly virus and was discharged later that month.

During his return trip to Liberia, Dr. Sacra will treat patients who have malaria and chronic health issues, not Ebola patients, even though physicians have said he is now immune to the virus. He will be in Liberia for about three weeks.

Dr. Sacra’s trip to Liberia will put him in the heart of the worst Ebola outbreak in history. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Ebola has killed 8,371 people in West Africa as of Jan. 10, and 3,515 of those deaths occurred in Liberia.
