Delaware sees record-breaking number of confirmed flu cases

Delaware broke the state record for number of confirmed flu cases this season since officials began keeping track of flu cases 14 years ago, with 5,758 cases so far, according to The News Journal.

The weekly total of confirmed flu cases increased by nearly 25 percent, and this season has far surpassed last year's total of 4,590 flu cases, which previously held the state record. The week of Feb. 18, Colorado also set a state record for number of flu hospitalizations.

Delaware recorded 19 flu deaths so far this season. Health officials expect high levels of flu activity to continue in the coming weeks.

Although CDC officials estimate the national flu season may be peaking, the Division of Public Health is not yet sure when it will peak in Delaware. Officials believe flu activity will remain high in the next few weeks, said division spokesperson Andrea Wojcik.

To prevent the spread of flu, state hospitals are restricting patient visitors.
