CMS cited 13 deficiencies at the hospital, 12 of which involved the lab, including inaccurate lab results that led to unnecessary procedures for patients, a five-hour delay for test results in the emergency department and a lack of policies and procedures in the lab and ED, according to the report. In response, the hospital made staff and leadership changes and voluntarily closed two lab departments, the blood bank and microbiology lab, according to the report.
Hospital officials said many of the problems were due to documentation errors and not quality of care, according to the report.
CMS mandated a correction plan; it is still reviewing four of the lab deficiencies, according to the report.
