The clarifications are based on feedback the CDC received from healthcare facilities on the guidelines it originally posted in October 2014. The new guidance addresses the use of fluid-resistant and impermeable gowns and coveralls and also provides specifications to assist healthcare facilities in selecting and ordering the garments.

Other updates made to the guidelines include:

  • Expanding the rationale for respiratory protection
  • Suggesting a designated PPE doffing assistant or “buddy”
  • Changing the order of boot cover removal
  • Emphasizing the important of cleaning the floor and works surfaces frequently
