In October 2010, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists sent an Internet-based questionnaire to the state epidemiologist in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

A total of 3,754 epidemiologists working in state and local health departments were reported. Of these, 2,476 (66 percent) worked at the state level and 1,278 (34 percent) worked at the local level. The state-level epidemiology workforce increased 12.9 percent during the 18 months since the previous assessment.

The researchers also found federal stimulus funding might have helped preserve and enhance the state-level epidemiology workforce.
