CDC: New Vancomycin-resistant Strep Strains Have Appeared

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as physicians in New York and New Mexico have confirmed two cases of vancomycin-resistant group B Streptococcus infections, according to a research letter in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The cases involved unrelated strains of bacteria that had independently acquired vancomycin-resistance genes and were also resistant to other classes of antibiotics.

Strep B most commonly causes meningitis and bloodstream infections but can also cause joint and skin infections, according to a report from HealthDay.
