CDC Grants $19.5M for Chronic Illness Prevention Strategies

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has awarded $19.5 million to 26 academic institutions to study how people and their communities can avoid or counter the risks of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, obesity and cancer.

The funds will support the development and evaluation of practical public health prevention interventions.

“Preventing chronic disease is critical to improving our nation’s well-being and avoiding excessive health care costs,” said Wayne Giles, MD, MS, director of CDC’s Division of Population Health.

The 26 prevention research centers that will design, test and disseminate prevention strategies are:

•    University of Alabama at Birmingham
•    University of Arizona in Tucson
•    University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock
•    University of California, San Francisco
•    Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland
•    Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.
•    University of Illinois at Chicago
•    University of Iowa in Iowa City
•    Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore
•    University of Kentucky in Lexington
•    University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester
•    Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta
•    University of Minnesota in Minneapolis
