According to the most recent data from the WDHS, the total number of bloodstream infections is thought to be as high as 62, with 57 laboratory confirmed cases, one case under investigation and four cases that tested positive for Elizabethkingia but cannot be confirmed as the same strain because the specimens are no longer available for further testing.
Eighteen deaths have been linked to the outbreak in Wisconsin to date.
Most of those infected are over the age of 65. Officials have not determined whether these deaths were directly caused by the infection or other pre-existing comorbidities. The CDC is currently assisting the WDHS in its investigation. The source of the outbreak remains unknown.
