American College of Surgeons releases surgical protocol for Ebola patients

 

The American College of Surgeons has adapted recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for caring for confirmed or suspected Ebola patients and applied them specifically to the OR environment in a new set of protocols.

The new set of guidelines, the first of its kind for OR personnel and surgical providers caring for Ebola patients, outlines protocols in the following six areas:

1. Patient transport and transfer to the OR

2. The surgical checklist

3. OR staff personal protection equipment

4. Surgical drapes

5. Instrumentation and sharps

6. OR staff exposure
