AMA to Target Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes in New Initiative

The American Medical Association announced it will focus on preventing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes and improving health outcomes for affected patients as the first phase of its Improving Health Outcomes initiative.

To prevent cardiovascular disease, the AMA will work with the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality, part of Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine, to find and share the causes and solutions of high blood pressure. The AMA and the Armstrong Institute aim to meet the goal of HHS' Million Hearts Initiative: to bring 10 million Americans' blood pressure under control by 2017.

The AMA will address diabetes by supporting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Diabetes Prevention Program and partnering with the YMCA of the USA to increase physician referrals of prediabetes patients to the Y's diabetes prevention programs.

The IHO initiative is one of AMA's three-part, five-year strategic plan, according to the release.
