AMA Moves Toward Value Determination Transparency

The American Medical Association panel that contributes to physician payment rates has announced it will make an effort to improve transparency in its decisions as it alters some of the methodology it enlists to determine service values, according to a report from The Washington Post.

Service values are based in part on the time a physician spends on each procedure he or she offers. A report earlier this year found the panel was incorrect by as much as 100 percent in estimating procedure times. These estimates are based on clinician surveys.

To this end, the panel announced its intent to standardize its surveying process and improve data collection.

In addition, the panel voted in October to release dates and locations of meetings as well as meeting minutes and vote tallies for all of its meetings.
