AMA, FDA team up to tackle foodborne illnesses

The American Medical Association is collaborating with the FDA to better educate physicians on ways to limit the spread of foodborne illness.

The two groups launched a series of continuing medical educational videos with information and resources on diagnosing, treating and reporting foodborne illnesses. The videos also contain insights on how physicians can educate patients on the illnesses.

The initiative follows a national Escherichia coli outbreak that spread to 13 states in December and caused one death.

"The CDC estimates that 48 million Americans are sickened by contaminated foods each year — leading to 128,000 hospitalizations and approximately 3,000 deaths," said AMA President David Barbe, MD. "These staggering statistics reinforce the reason why the AMA and FDA are taking action to help ensure all of our frontline physicians are prepared when a patient with foodborne illness comes into their hospitals, clinics and emergency departments."
