For their study, researchers randomly sampled three automated endoscope reprocessors using aldehydes for endoscope disinfection. After disinfection in all three samples, researchers found bacterial contamination persisted. What’s more, some mycobacteria isolates showed resistance to other disinfectants, including glutaraldehyde and ortho-phthaldehyde. Researchers concluded aldehyde disinfection may post an infection risk for patients.
