AHRQ releases toolkit for care of mechanically ventilated patients

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality released the Toolkit To Improve Safety for Mechanically Ventilated Patients.

The toolkit helps intensive care unit staff to apply principles and methods from AHRQ’s Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program to reduce complications for patients on ventilators. The toolkit includes resources used by hospitals that participated in the AHRQ Safety Program for Mechanically Ventilated Patients, a three-year project.

Mechanically ventilated patients are at risk of developing numerous complications, especially ventilator-associated pneumonia.

The toolkit includes four modules and other resources that will aim to help ICU staff “uncover local defects, implement interventions to prevent ventilator-associated events, and build a sustainable safety culture,” according to AHRQ.
