Accelerated hydrogen peroxide wipes can significantly reduce HAI rates

Introducing a disposable wiping system pre-wetted with an accelerated hydrogen peroxide disinfectant in a hospital can significantly reduce the rate of healthcare-associated infections caused by Clostridium difficile, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus, according to a study in the American Journal of Infection Control.

For the study, researchers compared using AHP disinfectant wipes in a hospital for 52 weeks to using a cleaner applied using cotton rags. Other cleaning practices were unchanged. The wipes were used once per day on all high-touch surfaces in patient care rooms.

The hospital using the AHP disinfectant wipes saw a significant reducing in HAI rates for C. diff, MRSA and VRE, the study found.

"Our study data showed that daily use of the [disposable wipe container system]…was superior to a cleaner alone because it resulted in significantly reduced rates of HAIs caused by C. difficile, MRSA and VRE," the authors concluded.
