71 people in 8 states sickened by salmonella linked to papayas

The CDC reported 71 salmonella cases in eight states linked to Cavi brand papayas from Mexico as of July 3, according to northjersey.com.

Four things to know:

1. The salmonella outbreak has sickened individuals in Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Texas.

2. Twenty-seven people have been hospitalized with salmonella since January 2019, marking a 60 percent hospitalization rate. Salmonella outbreaks typically lead to a 20 percent hospitalization rate.

3. The CDC told consumers July 5 to dispose of and avoid Cavi brand papayas and clean any surfaces on which they were stored. Other papayas are safe to eat.

4. Cavi brand papayas are distributed by Agroson’s in New York City. The company has yet to recall the fruit.
