St. Paul, Minn.-based 3M’s recently approved sterilization test can determine whether surgical instruments have been properly sterilized in 24 minutes, according to the Star Tribune.

Here are three key takeaways from the report.

1. The Attest Rapid-Readout Biological Indicator System, which earned Food and Drug Administration approval in July, is designed to assess sterilization processes that use vaporized hydrogen peroxide.

2. The test’s 24-minute readout makes it the fastest sterilization test approved by the FDA for vaporized hydrogen peroxide sterilization processes. Previously approved tests can take up to four hours, according to the report.

3. Since 3M’s announcement of the FDA premarket submission in May, the test has generated significant market excitement, according to Ericka Lutz, 3M’s global marketing manager for sterilization.

“The common reaction we’re hearing is, ‘If our hospital is able to improve efficiencies and enhance patient safety, it’s a clear win-win decision,'” Ms. Lutz told the Star Tribune.
