The report is based on data submitted by more than 2,000 hospitals for Leapfrog’s 2018 hospital survey. Leapfrog assessed hospitals’ compliance to nine standards for responding to 29 serious reportable events identified by the National Quality Forum.
The standards include waiving costs directly related to the event and inviting patients and families to participate in the root cause analysis process after an event occurs.
Leapfrog found 25.4 percent of hospitals failed to meet all nine standards in 2018. Nearly 64 percent of rural hospitals fully met these standards, compared to 76.4 percent of urban hospitals.
