The agreement will boost Gavi’s contribution to the stockpile by 200,000 doses. The global vaccine alliance also agreed to back a program to proactively vaccinate front-line health workers in countries that may be at risk of Ebola outbreaks.

The announcement comes as the Democratic Republic of Congo battles the second-worst Ebola outbreak in history. As of Dec. 4, the World Health Organization has reported 3,313 confirmed and probable Ebola cases, along with 2,203 deaths.

More than 255,000 doses of the Ebola vaccine have been administered since the outbreak began in August 2018, according to STAT.
