Subramaniam Sathasivam, Malaysia’s health minister, said that officials have put control measures in place near the infected woman’s home against the mosquitoes that carry Zika.

There are a number of defects linked to Zika, including microcephaly, which causes babies to be born with an abnormally small head, and sensory polyneuropathy, which causes decreased sensation in hands and feet.

Currently, 2,517 Zika cases have been reported in the United States., spread across all states, except Alaska and Wyoming. CDC Director Tom Frieden, MD, urged Congress to up funding for Zika prevention efforts, noting “Basically, we’re out of money.”
