157 cruise ship passengers sickened with suspected norovirus

The Coral Princess cruise ship docked in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., March 18 after a 10-day voyage during which time 157 of the ship's 2,016 passengers experienced symptoms commonly associated with norovirus, according to the CDC.

In addition to the passengers, 25 of the ship's 881-member crew also experienced symptoms related to the highly contagious virus. Common symptoms associated with the virus include vomiting, fever, stomach pain and diarrhea. The virus can be spread through person-to-person contact, contaminated surfaces and food.

A CDC official reportedly boarded the vessel on March 18 to conduct an environmental health assessment and evaluate the outbreak and the ship's infection control responses.
