The compilation of strategies was build based on presentations, audience discussions and follow-up at the 2011 AAMI/FDA Medical Device Reprocessing Summit. AAMI notes that these strategies are not intended to replace current evidence-based practices, regulations or internal policies. The 10 strategies include:

1.    Conquer the basics, including cleaning and disinfection/sterilization of reusable devices. Cleaning and disinfection/sterilization are two separate but equally important processes.
2.    Have the right tools in place, including readily accessibly instruction for use.
3.    Create a multidisciplinary committee to review priority issues and set a plan of action.
4.    Share lessons learned.
5.    Prepare and implement written procedures.
6.    Understand manufacturers’ recommendations, current standards and instructions for use.
7.    Include central sterile reprocessing staff in purchasing decisions.
8.    Separate and standardize functions and locations.
9.    Conduct ongoing training.
10.    Conduct an assessment for compliance.
