10 Inpatient Complications Most Associated With Mortality, Cost and LOS Increases

Premier has developed a list of 86 potential high-impact inpatient complications associated with significant increases in mortality, costs and length of stay.

Of the 86 identified complications, 10 have the highest association with increased mortality, cost and length of stay. They were associated with nearly $2.5 billion in costs, 24,000 potential mortalities and 920,000 added days in the hospital, according to Premier.

Those 10 are as follows, ordered by largest to smallest number of cases.

•    Acute renal failure
•    Hypertension
•    Respiratory failure
•    Sepsis/bacteremia
•    Aspiration pneumonia
•    Acute myocardial infarction
•    Gastrointestinal ulceration and hemorrhage
•    Cerebral infarction
•    Pulmonary embolism
•    Ventilator associated pneumonia

"Although not each and every complication is preventable, Premier's top 10 [potential inpatient complications] provide a starting point for providers to address those that occur frequently and could significantly impact patient outcomes," said Sharon Powell, MS, RN, patient safety officer and director of performance improvement and Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital, in a news release.

Of the 86 high-impact inpatient complications identified by Premier, just 22 are evaluated through federal payment policies and CMS.
