Startling photos show hospital left to rot after Hurricane Katrina

A series of photographs document the remains of a deteriorating New Orleans hospital decimated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Eleven years after the city was hit by a category five hurricane, American photographer Jeff Haggerman captured the remains of New Orleans-based Charity Hospital, the area's only teaching hospital at the time.

The images show the damage the hospital endured during the natural disaster. Mr. Haggerman said he also wanted to show just how quickly the facility had to be evacuated and how much was left behind.

Rather than rebuild and reopen the facility, the city relocated its teaching services to the nearby

University Hospital, until opening the UniversityMedicalCenter, also in New Orleans, in 2015.

City officials plan to clean out and empty the building as part of a six month, $10 million project, according to the article.

"This is a unique type of abandonment…much like the disasters in Ukraine and Japan, where everything just had to be left behind. I just don't want these places to be forgotten…before long, all that's left will be our pictures," said Mr. Haggerman. "People are also surprised at what was actually left at the place too. There are body parts in jars, microscope slides, medical records – everything."

Mr. Haggerman's photographs can be viewed here.
