Recreational marijuana may be a go in California, suggests survey

A new poll reveals that 58 percent of California voters support a November ballot measure that would legalize the recreational use of marijuana in the state, reports Los Angeles Times.

That finding comes from a USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times survey of 1,879 people. Only 34 percent of respondents would vote against the ballot measure if the election were held today, and 8 percent had no answer. The measure's strongest support (67 percent) comes from voters ages 18 to 24.

The ballot measure, Proposition 64, would allow Californians ages 21 or older to possess, transport and use up to an ounce of cannabis for recreational purposes, and would allow individuals to grow as many as six plants, reports Los Angeles Times. The measure would also impose a 15 percent tax on retail sales of the drug.

A similar initiative was rejected six years ago by 53.5 percent of California voters.
