Population health drives mobile remote patient monitoring

Roughly two-thirds (66 percent) of hospitals and health systems have recently deployed remote patient monitoring solutions to support their population health efforts, according to a recent Spyglass Consulting Group survey.

The survey — which was conducted starting in May — includes responses from more than 100 in-depth interviews with healthcare organization leaders involved in telehealth and telemedicine, including multi-hospital delivery systems, standalone community hospitals, ambulatory environments, home health agencies and government organizations.

According to Gregg Malkary, managing director of Spyglass, the rapid consolidating among healthcare providers into larger integrated delivery networks and the transition toward various at-risk payment and care delivery models is a contributing factor to the rise in RPM solutions.

"They are formulating strategies and deploying foundational technologies and processes required to support population health management programs focused on chronic disease management," said Mr. Malkary. "RPM solutions have been identified as an important early symptom management tool for patients considered at greatest risk for re-hospitalization."
