House rejects proposal to give CDC $10M for gun violence research

The House Appropriations Committee voted along party lines July 11 to reject a proposal to set aside $10 million in grants for gun violence research at the CDC, Politico reports.

The 32-20 Republican-Democrat vote follows an agreement earlier this year to lift a 1996 provision limiting gun violence research at the CDC.

The committee proposal would have been added to the Labor-HHS-Education draft spending bill for fiscal 2019. Republicans who opposed the amendment felt allotting funds for gun violence research would politicize the bill and said the CDC is free to research what it wants, according to the report.

The bill includes $177.1 billion in discretionary spending. It would increase funds for NIH by $1.25 billion and includes a provision requiring HHS to submit a reunification plan for immigrant children and parents.
