Salome Karwah, a Liberian nursing assistant included among the Ebola Fighters who were named Time magazine's Person of the Year in 2014 and who was pictured on the issue's cover, has died, according to Time.
Ms. Karwah died Feb. 21 from complications related to childbirth. Ms. Karwah's sister told a Time reporter that following the birth of her child Feb. 17, Ms. Karwah lapsed into convulsions. Physicians at the hospital reportedly "gave her distance" because "they didn't want contact with her fluids" given her previous exposure to Ebola, according to the report. Ms. Karwah contracted Ebola during the 2014 outbreak in West Africa and survived.
In a 2014 interview with a Time reporter, Ms. Karwah reportedly joked survivors had "super powers" because surviving the disease meant patients were immunized against it. She later returned to the hospital where she had been treated to help other patients, claiming it was her "moral duty to use those powers for the betterment of humankind," according to the report.
