American Public Health Association, IHI link efforts to improve health

The American Public Health Association and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement have joined forces to help fuel faster progress toward the shared goal of improved health.

The 100 Million Healthier Lives initiative — led by IHI and 140 founding partners — and APHA’s Healthiest Nation in One Generation campaign both seek to improve overall health by identifying new ways for healthcare organizations, community groups and public health agencies to work together.

While both the IHI and APHA’s initiatives will remain their own entities, they will collaborate to address the common challenges that negatively impact the health and well-being of the country, including child health and well-being, chronic disease management, community violence, and addressing the social and behavioral determinants of health.

All too often, improving health is thought about in “silos,” according to Soma Stout, MD, the executive external lead on health improvement for IHI.

“By bringing healthcare and public health together to address the common challenges of our nation, we are taking a giant leap forward in our likelihood of having an impact,” said Dr. Stout. “We hold different parts of the puzzle that, when brought together, can help us create exponential rather than incremental improvement.”

Correction: An earlier version of this article was phrased in a way that suggested the 100 Million Healthier Lives initiative was just launched. The initiative was launched in the Fall of 2014.
