Retail pharmacies to begin selling OTC birth control within weeks

Almost eight months after the FDA approved Opill, the first over-the-counter birth control pill, it will soon be available for purchase without a prescription at pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens in weeks, according to ABC News.

The move to make the pill available without a prescription was unanimously decided on by 17 members of the FDA committee.

A one month's supply of Opill will cost consumers about $20 out of pocket. A three-month's supply will be available for $50 and a six-month supply for $90, according to ABC. It can also be purchased online.

Costs will still be eligible for coverage under most insurance plans, but the maker of Opill said it will implement a low-cost and no-cost program for individuals who are low-income or underinsured or uninsured.

In addition to the over the counter birth control, CVS and Walgreens could also soon begin selling abortion pills in the months to come. The abortion pills would require a prescription.
