Ten prospective students have committed to the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy, which will begin classes in August, according to a Feb. 19 news release.

The UNMC, which is part of Omaha-based Nebraska Medicine, works with 37 preceptors across 27 clinical sites. The pharmacy students will receive in-person and synchronous, remote learning at the Omaha and Kearney campuses.

The first UNMC pharmacy class could expand to 16 students, the release said. The program recently hired three new faculty members:

  • Kristen Driver, PharmD, clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice and science, who was a former patient aligned care team pharmacist at the VA Medical Center in Grand Island, Neb.
  • Kyle McCartney, PharmD, clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice and science, who previously served as pharmacy manager at Kearney Regional Medical Center.
  • Kiran Sapkota, PhD, assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences, who previously was an instructor in pharmacology and experimental neuroscience at UNMC’s Omaha campus.

As of December 2023, there were 142 U.S.-based pharmacy colleges and schools with accredited professional degree programs, according to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy
