Majority of pharmacists expect AI to reduce pharmacy jobs

Among 1,363 practicing pharmacists, 82.5% reported some familiarity with AI software, but only 38.7% said they had used it, according to survey results published Nov. 28.

The survey, conducted between Sept. 5 and Nov. 22, asked pharmacists 19 questions about their perceptions of AI.

Key findings published in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association include:

  • Of those who use AI software, the most common tools are large language models (33.7%) and image generation (10%). 
  • 56.1% of pharmacists said they think AI will decrease the number of pharmacy jobs.
  • 34.9% expressed some degree of distrust of AI. 
  • 64.1% felt AI could enhance their professional effectiveness and productivity.
  • Men use AI more than women, with utilization rates of 50.1% compared to 31%.
  • By age group, the highest AI utilization was among those aged 23-29 and lowest among those aged 60 and older.
