Hospitals no longer top-paying setting for pharmacy techs

Historically, hospitals were the most lucrative work setting for pharmacy technicians. Ambulatory healthcare services have now taken that spot, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics

In 2021, 16% of U.S. pharmacy techs worked in hospitals, earning an average annual salary of $38,270. Pharmacies employed 50% of the workforce, paying an average of $35,940, while grocery stores employed 9% and paid $36,090. 

In 2023 — the most recent data available — the highest average pay, $48,270, went to those employed by ambulatory healthcare services. This work setting accounted for 4% of the pharmacy technician workforce. 

Here is the average salary for pharmacy technicians in other work environments:

  • Hospitals: $47,940, 17% of the workforce
  • General merchandise stores: $44,500, 9%
  • Grocery stores: $37,420, 10% 
  • Pharmacies and drugstores: $37,370, 51%
