46 health organizations pen letter warning about lasting effects of government shutdown

Forty-six healthcare originations penned a letter to President Donald Trump, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other lawmakers, calling for an end to the government shutdown, which entered its 33rd day on Jan. 23.

The letter warns about the potential lasting effects of the continued shutdown and addresses their concern about the FDA's limited ability to work.

"The agency regulates one quarter of the U.S. economy, ensures a safe food supply, protects patients from contaminated and unsafe medical products and, importantly, is the catalyst for expediting lifesaving therapies to patients," the letter reads.

Organizations included on the letter represent millions of American patients, caregivers, healthcare providers and researchers. The organizations include the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Alliance on Mental Illness and Research!America, among others.

"We fear that this continued shutdown not only puts the current health and safety of Americans at risk, but has begun to put future scientific discovery and innovation in jeopardy," the letter reads.
